KTL rate eighteen sports across nine systems, and sixteen of those sports take a very suitable from at least one system. Aerobic and fitness never do: two flat rows of suitable, nine columns wide, which is the manufacturer declining to rate any of its floors best for the room you are actually building.

KTL's matrix scores nine systems against eighteen sports. Sixteen of those sports take a very suitable from at least one system. Aerobic and fitness take none: all nine systems are rated suitable, and not one is rated better. The range is engineered around ball response and area-elastic deformation, and a studio asks instead for impact absorption, point load resistance and cleanability.

The flat rows also mean the grid cannot choose for you. Filtered to the four rows this room is scored against, aerobic and fitness are flat across all nine systems, so only the yoga and dance rows separate anything, and the dance row does nearly all of the work: eight systems are very suitable for yoga and only FlexiPRO 21 with a resilient covering drops to suitable, where the dance row spreads across all four marks. FlexiPRO 12 V3, PRO III, PRO II V2, Multiflex Advanced V2 and Multi Clip are rated very suitable for both yoga and dance. The two portable systems are very suitable for yoga and suitable for dance. FlexiPRO 21 with a hard covering is very suitable for yoga and less suitable for dance, and with a resilient covering it is suitable for yoga and unsuitable for dance. KTL's certificates are FIBA, IHF and BWF alongside the EN and ISO standards, and nothing in the catalogue certifies a floor for yoga or fitness, so unlike a badminton hall there is no certificate to break the tie either. The decision moves to build height, point load, cleaning regime and how the room will actually be used.

Point load is where the room splits in two, and the catalogue will not settle it. KTL define the studio load case as light load and transport of equipment, and racks, benches and spin bikes are not obviously that. Of the four candidates here only FlexiPRO 21 with a hard covering carries high point and rolling load; Multi Clip at 32 mm, Multiflex Advanced V2 at 52 mm and FlexiPRO 21 with a resilient covering at 26 mm are all standard. Across the whole range six systems are high and three are standard. High and standard are class letters: nothing in the catalogue puts a force or a contact area behind either.

This is also the one room in the range where combi-elastic is the right answer rather than the ruled out one. FlexiPRO 21 with a resilient vinyl or PU covering is the only combi-elastic build KTL make, and KTL describe combi-elastic as adding a resilient surface on top of the resilient structure, which is what standing, kneeling and floor work want. It is the same property that makes the identical build unsuitable for dance and less suitable for basketball everywhere else.

Build height then decides the retrofit, as it does in a ballet room. The candidates run from 26 mm for either FlexiPRO 21 build to 52 mm for Multiflex Advanced V2, and both FlexiPRO 21 figures exclude the covering itself, so add 2-4 mm or 6-9 mm. PRO II V2 at 64 mm and PRO III at 76 mm are ruled out on height before their certificates are discussed.

22 mm solid hardwood floating on an elastic foam underlay with x-clip end joints, 32 mm total, EN 14904 class A3, area-elastic, standard point and rolling load. Rated very suitable for yoga and for dance, and suitable for fitness and aerobic, which is the ceiling for those two rows across the whole range. It is the lowest solid hardwood build KTL make, it floats rather than fixing to the slab, and KTL name Clip in their own Studio and Yoga recommendation. Its own page carries the yoga and studio badge, and it is the one system page in the catalogue where no purpose is stated at all. The trade is the class letter. Multi Clip is one of only two class A3 builds in a range where six systems are class A4, and KTL publish no shock absorption value behind either letter, so how far apart A3 and A4 actually sit here cannot be read from the catalogue. It is also the ballet room recommendation, so a studio that adds dance classes later has not closed a door.

FlexiPRO 21 + hard covering

KTL's 21 mm birch plywood subfloor on 3-step elastic rubber strips, 26 mm excluding the covering, EN 14904 class A4 as an area-elastic subfloor under a 2-4 mm non-resilient covering, with high point and rolling load. Rated very suitable for yoga and suitable for fitness and aerobic. It is the only one of these four candidates carrying high point and rolling load, and at 26 mm it is the lowest build in the range, level with the resilient covering variant of the same subfloor. Two things travel with it. KTL supply the wooden subfloor only, so the covering comes from a third party and it is the covering that decides what a barefoot client feels, how the surface cleans and whether it has welded seams or none, and the class A4 result holds only with a 2-4 mm non-resilient covering. And the dance row rates it less suitable where Multi Clip is very suitable, so it is the weaker of the two recommendations in a studio that intends to run dance.

Multiflex Advanced V2

Rated very suitable for yoga and for dance, suitable for fitness and aerobic, and named by KTL in their own Studio and Yoga recommendation. KTL describe the batten as carrying integrated progressive shock absorption, where Multi Clip's resilient layer is a foam underlay they describe only as good shock absorption. No shock absorption value is published for either, so on paper the difference is that description and the class letter, A4 against A3. It is the lower build of the only two systems carrying both a FIBA licence and BWF Grade 1 International Elite, the other being PRO II V2 at 64 mm. It is 20 mm taller than Multi Clip, and the point load class does not change.

FlexiPRO 21 + elastic covering

The same 21 mm KTL subfloor under a 6-9 mm resilient vinyl or PU covering, 26 mm excluding it, EN 14904 class C4, the only combi-elastic system KTL make, standard point and rolling load. Rated suitable for yoga, fitness and aerobic. KTL describe combi-elastic as adding a resilient surface on top of the resilient structure, and standing, kneeling and floor work want give at the surface. Two things travel with it. The dance row rates it unsuitable, the only unsuitable mark in that row, so we would not put this build in a studio that intends to run dance classes. And its point and rolling load are standard with no value published behind the letter, so an equipment schedule has to go to KTL before this build can be specified at all.

Saying what was rejected is half the value of a specification. Several of these are rated very suitable for the sport and are still wrong for this room.

  • PRO II V2

    EN 14904 A4, 64 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A4, area-elastic, 64 mm, high point and rolling load, FIBA 2020 Level 1 licence WF73-01 and BWF Grade 1 International Elite. Rated very suitable for yoga and for dance, and named in KTL's own Studio and Yoga recommendation, but more than twice the build height of the thin options in a room where height usually decides. It returns for one reason only: a slab so far out of level that PRO II V2's shoe and wedge system does the levelling instead of a screed. That raises the finished floor, and the catalogue gives two different figures for the wedged build, 86-144 mm in the height table and 84-144 mm in the system's own feature text, which has to be resolved with KTL before this build can be specified.

  • PRO III

    EN 14904 A4, 76 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A4, area-elastic, 76 mm, high point and rolling load, FIBA 2020 Level 1 licence WF73-03 and no BWF grade. The same argument as PRO II V2 and worse on the deciding property: it is the tallest system KTL make, and it adds arena batten depth a studio will never load. It returns only if the slab has to be levelled by wedge rather than by screed, accepting that KTL state the wedged build at 96-156 mm, which is more height than this room can usually give up.

  • FlexiPRO 12 V3

    EN 14904 A4, 39 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A4, area-elastic, 39 mm, high point and rolling load, FIBA 2020 Level 1 licence WF73-06. On paper a strong equipment bearing studio floor: very suitable for yoga and for dance, a reasonable build height, the load class this room's fitness half needs, and named in KTL's own Studio and Yoga recommendation. It loses to FlexiPRO 21 with a hard covering, which reaches the same class A4 result and the same high point and rolling load at 26 mm. KTL also state that FlexiPRO 12 V3 takes its stability from a full glue down of the floorboards to the plywood, so the boards are not lifted and reused; whether the assembly is bonded to the slab is not stated in the catalogue and would have to be asked.

  • Portable PRO Summit V2

    EN 14904 A3, 44 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A3, area-elastic, 44 mm, high point and rolling load, FIBA Level 1 licence WF73-07. KTL's usage table flags all nine systems for studio and yoga use, this one included, but their Studio and Yoga class then names six systems, Portable PRO, FlexiPRO 12, PRO III, PRO II V2, MFA V2 and Clip, plus FlexiPRO 21 with a vinyl, PU or Lino covering, and Portable PRO Summit V2 is the one system in the range left out. Its stated purpose is professional basketball and other fast ball games, and multi-purpose use in large sport and event arenas. We rule it out on the operating case rather than on that inconsistency: demountable panels and arena load capacity in a permanent room that needs neither.

  • Portable PRO

    EN 14904 A4, 44 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A4, area-elastic, 44 mm, high point and rolling load, BWF Grade 1 International Elite and no FIBA licence. Rated very suitable for yoga and named in KTL's own Studio and Yoga recommendation, so this is a rule out on the operating case rather than on suitability. Portability does nothing for a permanent fit out and brings panel storage, trolleys and a lay crew with it. Revisit it only if the studio occupies the space temporarily, or the floor has to follow the business when it moves.

What we add that the catalogue does not.

  • Put the equipment schedule in the enquiry, because the catalogue answers point load with a class letter and nothing else. Send the rack footplates and their bearing area, the machine and bike weights, whether dumbbells will be set down or dropped, and what is fixed to the floor. KTL's answer is what decides between the standard load candidates and FlexiPRO 21 with a hard covering.
  • Slab moisture is ours to specify. KTL's moisture story is entirely board side, customised board moisture content and back lacquered boards, and the catalogue says nothing about the slab at all. On a Thai ground bearing slab we measure slab relative humidity before ordering and specify a surface damp proof membrane against the reading.
  • Board moisture content is a regional input, not a room one. KTL state that boards are customised with a moisture content suited to the climatic conditions in your area, and say nothing about a per room service. A continuously air conditioned studio and an unconditioned one are different service conditions, so we state the installation city and the air conditioning regime on the order and ask KTL to confirm the moisture content they will supply against both.
  • Substrate flatness is a separate scope item and we scope it. Every candidate here is specified over levelled concrete or an existing sports floor and needs an even subfloor, so we specify the flatness tolerance the chosen system needs and size the levelling screed to it. Only PRO III and PRO II V2 carry a shoe and wedge system that takes up level, and both are ruled out here on build height.
  • We specify low gloss. KTL list optional gloss levels of low gloss, semi gloss, glossy and super glossy, and the coating is factory applied, so gloss is an order stage decision rather than a site one. A mirrored room with directional lighting and clients working on the floor looking up throws glare into exactly that sightline. We do not argue the finish on grip: KTL publish no friction or slip resistance figure for any system, so that property cannot be settled from the catalogue at all.
  • If the floor goes synthetic, we specify the covering, because KTL do not supply it. KTL state the class A4 area-elastic result with a 2-4 mm non-resilient covering and the class C4 combi-elastic result with a 6-9 mm vinyl or PU covering, so the covering decides both the classification and everything a barefoot client feels. We require the covering supplier to confirm the combined system test rather than their own sheet alone, and we check the covering's own barefoot use and cleaning ratings.
  • We coordinate the perimeter before the mirrors are ordered. Multi Clip is a floating floor, so its edge has to be free to move, and the mirror base sits at floor level. The expansion gap, the skirting, the barre fixings and the wall anchors are all set against the chosen build height rather than after it.
  • A studio takes no court markings, so site applied line marking is out of scope for every candidate here. We would also rather say plainly that a weights room is out of scope: loaded barbells need dropped load rated rubber gym flooring, which KTL do not make and this catalogue never mentions.

What we would put to the manufacturer.

Before anybody signs anything. These are gaps in the published data, not doubts about the floor.

  • No point load value is published, only the class letter, high or standard. Nothing in the catalogue puts a force or a contact area behind either letter, so an equipment schedule has to be answered by the manufacturer rather than checked against a number.
  • Cleaning and maintenance is listed by KTL as a factor in choosing a floor and is then never covered anywhere in the catalogue. Ask KTL for the approved chemicals, the frequency, what voids the ten year warranty on the seven layer UV coating, and how board joints are expected to behave under a daily wet mop, in the one room that gets one.
  • No shock absorption, vertical deformation or ball rebound value is published, only the EN 14904 class letters, and no friction or slip resistance figure appears at all. If a brief names a figure, it has to come from the test reports rather than from the catalogue.
  • EN 14904 is a sports floor standard, and there is no yoga or fitness classification in it or anywhere in the catalogue. Ask what evidence supports the fitness and aerobic ratings, given they are the two rows the manufacturer never rates very suitable.
  • Six wood species are named and KTL's own page promises their advantages, then gives only the names and swatch photographs with no per species technical data. Ask for a species comparison and a graded sample before choosing on appearance, which matters more here than usual because bare feet are on this floor all day.
  • KTL supply no wearing surface for FlexiPRO 21. Ask which covering products were on the floor when the class A4 and the class C4 results were obtained, and whether either classification transfers to an equivalent covering from a different supplier.
