Two of KTL's nine systems are portable. Choosing between them is not about the fact that they come up. One is built for professional ball games and the other is not, their certifications do not overlap, and no single portable covers both sanctioned basketball and sanctioned badminton. The demanding part is the part the catalogue does not describe: the cycle of laying the floor and taking it up again.

Exactly two of KTL's nine systems are portable, and their certifications do not overlap. Portable PRO Summit V2 is EN 14904 class A3 with FIBA Level 1 under licence WF73-07 and no BWF grade. Portable PRO is EN 14904 class A4 with BWF Grade 1 International Elite and no FIBA licence at all. Both are 44 mm, both are area-elastic and both carry high point and rolling load. So an arena that wants sanctioned basketball and sanctioned badminton cannot cover both codes with one portable KTL floor. Two fixed systems do hold both: PRO II V2, FIBA 2020 Level 1 under licence WF73-01 with BWF Grade 1 International Elite, and Multiflex Advanced V2, FIBA 2020 Level 1 under licence WF73-02 with BWF Grade 1 International Elite.

The structural difference between fixed and portable is a block of work that simply is not done. A fixed floor is built to the subfloor it is given. FlexiPRO 12 V3 and Multiflex Advanced V2 both state a levelled slab or an existing sports floor; PRO III and PRO II V2 both state an uneven concrete or subfloor, and their shoe system exists so the floor can be levelled over it with KTL wedges or shims. Either way that work is done on site and is not repeated, because a fixed floor stays where it is built, and its game lines are applied on site over the factory coating afterwards. A portable floor clips together over the surface it finds, concrete or an existing sports floor for both systems, and its logos and lines are printed onto the panels before lacquering. So this page describes what work the portable route removes, and what work it adds back. What is removed is removed once; what is added is repetition. A floor laid twenty times a year is laid twenty times, and every lay needs a crew, trolleys and somewhere to keep the panels in between.

Portability gives up almost nothing on the suitability matrix. Score the six matrix rows this space is judged against, counting KTL's grades as three for very suitable down to zero for unsuitable, and Summit lands at 17 of a possible 18, Portable PRO at 16, and each of the five fixed solid-wood systems at 17. The weighting is ours; the grades are KTL's. The single divergence between the two portables is basketball, very suitable on Summit and suitable on Portable PRO, and it holds across all eighteen rows of the matrix, not just these six. Summit is the only system whose stated purpose names professional basketball, but it is not the only certified one: four fixed systems hold FIBA licences of their own.

Everything KTL publish about handling describes one direction of travel. The catalogue carries a single handling claim, a full 700 square metre basketball court installed within three hours with a team of six, and describes both portables as fast and easy to install with the flexi-lock clip system. Nothing states a crew size or a duration for taking the floor up, and no cycle life is published for the flexi-lock clips, the panel edges or the coating. For an event floor that cycle life is the governing durability number, and so are the panel weight, the panels per square metre, the trolley capacity and the storage volume, none of which are published either. Those gaps are put to the manufacturer in the questions below rather than filled in here.

One detail settles a brief on its own, and one trap is worth naming before it does. Summit's stated underlay is concrete, an existing sports floor and synthetic turfs; Portable PRO's is concrete or an existing sports floor, so a turf pitch converting to a hard court eliminates Portable PRO on that line alone. The trap is Multi Clip. It floats rather than fixing down, it is clip-jointed, and at 32 mm it is the thinnest solid-wood system, so it reads as demountable. KTL do not list it as portable, its page is the only one in the range with the purpose field left empty, their own recommendation lists place it under studio and yoga use only, and they never claim it can be struck and relaid.

Rated very suitable for badminton, handball, futsal and multiple usage, and suitable for basketball and volleyball. Its stated underlay is concrete or an existing sports floor only, and KTL describe it as multi-purpose usage for a number of sports on a non-professional level. On this sport set the gap that matters is basketball: rated suitable rather than very suitable, with no FIBA licence behind it.

The same 44 mm three-layer construction and flexi-lock clip system, with the FIBA licence of the two: EN 14904 class A3, area-elastic, high point and rolling load, FIBA Level 1 under licence WF73-07. It is the only portable rated very suitable for basketball and the only system in the range whose stated purpose names professional basketball, though four fixed systems carry FIBA licences of their own: FlexiPRO 12 V3, PRO III, PRO II V2 and Multiflex Advanced V2. It is also the only system whose stated underlay includes synthetic turfs. It carries no BWF grade, so it is the wrong portable if badminton is the sanctioned code. KTL publish the EN 14904 class letter and no test value behind it, so A3 against A4 is a difference in classification and not a ranking this page can turn into performance.

Carried here as the comparator rather than as a portable option: 22 x 130 mm boards fully glued with MS-polymer adhesive to a birch-plywood subfloor, 39 mm, EN 14904 class A4, FIBA 2020 Level 1 under licence WF73-06, high point and rolling load. It scores 17 of 18 on this sport set, the same as Summit, at a lower build height, and KTL attribute extremely high floor stability to the full glue-down of the boards to the plywood. There is no store, no trolleys and no lay and strike cycle for the life of the floor. It needs a levelled slab, its game lines are applied on site, and a floor fully glued to its subfloor is the opposite of demountable. The question this floor forces is operational: how many times a year the floor is laid and struck, and who provides the crew, the trolleys and the store each time.

Saying what was rejected is half the value of a specification. Several of these are rated very suitable for the sport and are still wrong for this room.

  • Multi Clip System

    EN 14904 A3, 32 mm, Standard load

    EN 14904 class A3, area-elastic, 32 mm, standard point and rolling load. The one that looks portable and is not: it floats, it is clip-jointed and it is the thinnest solid-wood system in the range. KTL do not list it as portable and never claim it can be struck and relaid. They describe the x-clip only as a solution for end joints, and publish nothing either way about repeated assembly, which is why a semi-permanent demountable brief has to be put to them explicitly rather than inferred from the joint type. Their own usage-class recommendation lists place it under studio and yoga use only.

  • Multiflex Advanced V2

    EN 14904 A4, 52 mm, Standard load

    EN 14904 class A4, area-elastic, 52 mm, standard point and rolling load, with BWF Grade 1 International Elite and FIBA 2020 Level 1 under licence WF73-02. Machine-nailed to battens over a levelled slab, so it is fixed by construction. KTL put it on their recommendation list for a multi-purpose hall and not on the one for a large arena. It is the right answer in a fixed hall and the wrong one here, and the difference between those two rooms is entirely whether the floor has to come up.

  • PRO II V2

    EN 14904 A4, 64 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A4, area-elastic, 64 mm and 86-144 mm on wedges, high point and rolling load, with BWF Grade 1 International Elite and FIBA 2020 Level 1 under licence WF73-01. Nailed to LVL battens on a shoe and wedge system, over an uneven concrete or subfloor. It is one of only two systems certified for both codes, which makes it a serious answer to a dual-code brief, but the levelling that makes it useful over an uneven subfloor is set to that subfloor, and KTL never present it as demountable.

  • PRO III

    EN 14904 A4, 76 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A4, area-elastic, 76 mm and 96-156 mm on wedges, high point and rolling load, FIBA 2020 Level 1 under licence WF73-03. The same construction as PRO II V2 on a thicker batten, also stated for an uneven concrete or subfloor, and the tallest system KTL make before any wedge raise. Fixed by construction, and nothing in its description points at repeated assembly.

  • FlexiPRO 21 + hard covering

    EN 14904 A4, 26 mm, High load

    EN 14904 class A4 as an area-elastic subfloor with a 2-4 mm non-resilient covering, 26 mm excluding that covering, high point and rolling load. KTL supply the birch-plywood subfloor only and the covering is third-party. Nothing is published about lifting and relaying either layer, and no single party is responsible for the surface that would have to survive it.

  • FlexiPRO 21 + elastic covering

    EN 14904 C4, 26 mm, Standard load

    EN 14904 class C4 as a combi-elastic floor with a 6-9 mm vinyl or PU covering, 26 mm excluding that covering, standard point and rolling load. Fixed by construction like its hard-covering sibling, and the weakest column on this sport set at 12 of 18: less suitable for basketball and less suitable for futsal. Neither portable nor a good event floor.

What we add that the catalogue does not.

  • Slab moisture, and a damp-proof membrane if the reading calls for one, even though the floor never touches the slab. This item is ours, not KTL's: their moisture story is entirely board-side, customised moisture content and back-lacquered boards, and the catalogue says nothing about the slab at all. On a Thai ground-bearing slab we measure slab relative humidity and specify against the reading, because a portable floor does not make a wet slab acceptable, and panels stored on one are at the same risk.
  • Substrate flatness, which we set because the manufacturer does not. No flatness tolerance is published for either portable system. We survey the slab, state the tolerance in the specification, and scope any grinding or patching as its own item rather than let the floor being demountable stand in for it.
  • Board moisture content for the destination climate. KTL supply boards at a moisture content suited to the climatic conditions in your area, which only works if we tell them the destination. We state the installation city on the purchase order, whether the hall is air-conditioned continuously, seasonally or not at all, and where the floor is stored between events, because a conditioned hall and an unconditioned store are two climates for one floor.
  • Gloss level, fixed at order stage from KTL's four factory options. For an arena with broadcast lighting we specify semi-gloss or lower and record the reason, because the coating is factory-applied and changing it later means sanding and recoating every panel.
  • The printed design and the full line set, settled before the order. Logos and game lines are printed onto the panels before lacquering, which is why a portable floor needs no site marking and also why the artwork cannot be changed afterwards without re-manufacturing panels. We fix the identity marks and the complete sport line set at order stage, and record in writing what a rebrand or an added line set would involve.
  • Storage and handling, written as part of the floor specification. Trolleys, a store with the right floor loading and door width, a route from store to hall, and a named installation crew, with the manufacturer's installation training or first-lay supervision written into the order if that crew has not laid this system before. None of it can be sized until KTL supply panel dimensions, panel weight and panels per square metre, so we treat those three figures as a precondition of ordering rather than a detail to chase later.
  • Perimeter and edge detail. A laid panel floor has a free perimeter and exposed panel edges at every junction with the slab, a doorway or an adjoining surface. We specify the edge ramps or trims, the threshold tolerance and the detail at any post or socket that passes through the floor, because panel edges are where the wear concentrates.
  • An inspection at every lay, and a lay count. We write into the operating procedure that the flexi-lock clips, the panel edges and the coating are checked each time the floor goes down, that damaged panels have a named replacement route, and that the number of installations is logged. No cycle life is published, so that log is the only durability evidence the operator will ever have.

What we would put to the manufacturer.

Before anybody signs anything. These are gaps in the published data, not doubts about the floor.

  • No panel dimensions, no panel weight, no panels per square metre, no trolley capacity and no storage volume are published. The catalogue's whole statement on the subject is one Summit feature line, light weight panels in ergonomic design for easy handling, and Portable PRO's feature list says nothing about panel weight. All five figures are needed before a store, a truck or a crew can be planned, so ask for them against the actual court size.
  • No lay and strike cycle life is stated anywhere in the forty pages, for the flexi-lock clips, the panel edges or the coating. For a floor that is laid and taken up repeatedly that is the governing durability figure, and it is absent. Ask for it in writing, and ask separately whether repeated laying and striking counts as normal wear and tear under the only warranty KTL publish, ten years on the seven-layer UV coating.
  • Every timing claim in the catalogue describes laying: a full 700 square metre basketball court within three hours with a team of six. Nothing states a crew size or a duration for taking the floor up, which an operator does exactly as often. Both halves of the cycle are needed before anyone builds an operating model.
  • The two portable systems do not share a certification. Summit holds a FIBA licence, number WF73-07, and no BWF grade; Portable PRO holds BWF Grade 1 International Elite and no FIBA licence. Ask for the certificates themselves, and put two asymmetries in the document to them. FIBA is given as a licence number while BWF appears only as a form of words, with no certificate reference anywhere. And the organisation page says most floor systems, portable and fixed, are approved for competition levels 1, 2 and 3, while only five system pages name a FIBA licence at all.
  • No shock-absorption, vertical-deformation, ball-rebound or friction value is published for any system, only the EN 14904 class letter, and nothing in the catalogue reports a test on a floor after repeated laying and striking. A tender that asks for measured numbers cannot be answered from this document, so request the EN 14904 test reports.
  • Summit's stated underlay includes synthetic turfs and Portable PRO's does not. If the floor lays over a turf pitch, ask what preparation the turf needs, how long it can stay covered, and whether the turf's own warranty survives being covered at all.
